His parents, Willis Isaac Mitchell and Margaret Olive Burch were farmers, however for most of their lives they did not own farmland. Willis either rented or worked the land of other farmers. In 1910 the family moved to Galveston Texas where Willis worked as a farm laborer for a grower. They were back in Lawrence Co. Indiana by 1914 however. His parents were never prosperous and supporting so many children was difficult.
Cresson married 02 Apr 1927 in Monroe Co., Ind. He was 21 and his spouse, Oma Hayes, was 17.
The couple had two children:
Meredith Cresson Mitchell 1928–1980
Maxine E Mitchell 1935–1992
In 1929 Cresson left Indiana and move to Issaquah Washington. He got a job in a saw mill. In 1936 he started a garbage collection route. He also worked as a bus driver.
Cresson and Oma later divorced and in September 1956 Cresson married Lucile Erma McNeal (his brother Alva's widow).
Cresson died on May 1, 1968, in Seattle, Washington, at the age of 63, and was buried in Issaquah, Washington. Cause of death was cancer.
