His parents were farmers, however for most of their lives they did not own any farmland. Willis either rented or worked the land of other farmers. The family was never wealthy and supporting so many children was difficult. Alvie's mother died of stomach cancer when Alvie was 18. Alvie began working in the local stone quarries.
Alvie married 18 Jun 1931. He was 19 His bride was 18-year-old Lucile Erma McNeal. The couple had one son:
Herman Alva Mitchell 1932–2006
Alvie continued work as a quarryman during the 1930s and was still working in that industry in 1940. In 1942 he was a foreman with General Motors in Indianapolis as part of the Defense effort for WWII.
After the war he moved to Issaquah Washington, where his brothers, Cresson and Forrest, were living. He worked as a bus driver.
Alva died 7 Apr 1953 of pancreatic cancer. He was 40 years old.
