William spent time in the Civil war with one of his brothers, Lewis Michael Lowe. Lewis M. Lowe joined the same day in the same company as his brother William.
Lewis Michael Lowe was taken prisoner and died

Another brother Elias Michael did join much later ,however he didn't go into battle as it was near the end of the Civil War.

William was wounded and had a disability from all accounts of his military records at the *Old Soldiers Home*


After the war and before 1870, William left Indiana and moved to California , he is found living next to brother John Rufus and his family. William was head of household , also in his home were Boliver and James Polk Root, brothers -in-laws to William's brother John Rufus Lowe.

William's occupation as railroad engineer took him away often and eventually he moved to Oregon.
He was a railroad engineer most of his adult life. William lived in Rock Creek, Wasco County,Oregon for some years and then removed to Saint Helen Township in Columbia County,Oregon.

William entered the Old Soldier's Home on November 17, 1905. The Pacific Sawtelle Branch,Malibu,Los Angeles, California, he was AWL (Absent with leave),in May 1910, he returned home to Saint Helens and died in the late fall of 1911.
William didn't stay very long in Califorina, there was only about a 5 year span, from the time he entered the home and when he left to return to Oregon.



On April 15-16, 1910 the census was taken in St. Helens,Oregon, William stated he was a *fisherman on the Columbia river * .

On May 9, 1910 the census was taken at the Old Soldiers home in Malibu, information was filled in for him as if he were there while he was on leave at his home in St. Helen's, Oregon.Some of the information was incorrect.He never retuned to the Old Soldiers home,. He decided where and when he would die, ~living at his own home and fishing on the Columbia~.
