Mrs. Johnson was born in Waycross, Ga. she grew up in Winter Haven Florida and New Orleans LA. She was a graduate in Humanities from Virginia Wesleyan collage and later worked in the cafeteria at Creeds Elementary School. She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church, where she was a Sunday School teacher and Youth Group leader. She was a rug-hooking artist and also taught rug hooking. She was a former member of the Creeds Volunteer Rescue Squad. She was an active gardener and herbalist as well as being active in animal husbandry.
She is survived by her husband, Robert L. Johnson; a daughter, Avis E. Bartkus of Crisfield, Md.; and a sister, Diane Wertz of Clearwater, Fla.
The funerals will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday in Sandbridge Community Chapel of the United Methodist Church by the Rev. Edward S. Martin, the Rev. Frank Jennings and the Rev. John H. Shappell. Burial will be in the Knotts Island United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Smith & Williams Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel, today from 7 to 8 p.m. Memorial donations in memory of both may be made to the Judeo-Christian Outreach Center, 1053 Virginia Beach Blvd., Virginia Beach, VA 23451.
