Served aboard LST-523. LST-523 was assigned to the European theater and participated in the invasion of Normandy in June 1944. On Monday, June 19, 1944 while operating off the Normandy beachhead, LST 523 struck an enemy mine. Forty-two of her men perished in the incident. LST 523 was damaged so severely by the mine explosion that she sank almost immediately after being hit.
