From the Memoirs of Gen. Joseph Gardner Swift, Mary's eldest brother:

1821: "My sister, Mary Roberdeau, married to LT. G.W Whistler, USA,... giving my father great uneasiness , as they were without adequate means of housekeeping. However, my mother and myself had a favorable estimate of the worth and ability of Mr. Whistler."

1827: "Arrived in NY, met with the intelligence of the death of....my own sister Mary, the beautiful wife of LT. George W. Whistler. Her remains were placed by me alongside those of my mother in Brooklyn."

1847: " I disinterred the remains of my mother and sister Mary, and my child Harriett, and re-interred them in Twilight Dell in Greenwood, the coffins in good condition,the silver plate on Mary's very bright."

Married at 16 to 21 yr old West Point graduate and engineer Lt.George Washington Whistler, as his first wife and mother of his first three children:

Deborah Delano (Whistler) Haden (1825-1908)
