Mile's grandfather John Johnstone/Johnson(Temperance's father ) was an Old United Empire Loyalist, he served in the R.R.N.Y. and received land in E.D. Recorded in the early Ontario Settlers, A Source book, Was living in 1786 place Murray District of Niagara.
Recorded in the Old United Empire Loyalist Book was the following transcript:
Name: John Johnstone, residence H, District..One of this
District Number: 13
name, a soldier in the R.R.N.Y. and got land in E.D..one a settler of 1787 of Stamford.
Temperance was also a United Empire Loyalist, she applied for for a land grant of 200 acres in 1821, at that time her and David were living in Thorold, Ontario. Old records were burned, she did receive the grant in 1838, but never did live on that land in Lambton County, she may have died in 1840.
In request it mentions she is the daughter of John Johnstone, UEL, Stamford and the wife of David Hotchkiss.
Also in the document it mentions David was loyal during the recent war. Unfortunately the copy of the request is damaged and not legible in some parts. She followed up on the request in 1837 and finally received a grant on October 15, 1838, of 200 acres, lot 1, concession 3, Brooks Township, near Sarnia. There is no evidence that the family settled the land which was eventually sold for back taxes.
The Hotchkiss family are of Dutch descent
