James C. Patterson Sr., 74, died at 8:50 p.m. Oct. 8, 2010, at his residence.

He was born May 20, 1936, in Lima to Moses A. and Elizabeth Greenland Patterson, who preceded him in death. On March 17, 1962, he married Anita L. Roberts, who survives.

Mr. Patterson retired after 27 years at Dana Corp. as a machinist. He was previously employed by Warner Swasey Superior Metals. On St. Patrick's Day 1962, he married his lovely wife of 48 years, Anita Louise Roberts Cowart, who survives with their wonderful memories. In 1954, he graduated from St. John High School in Lima and enlisted in the U.S. Army Special Forces. He provided for his family working for Dana Corp. He was a member of the United Auto Workers Local 1765 and union steward for a number of years. He was also president of the Retirees Local 1765 for three years. He was a long-standing member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a Cleveland Browns, Ohio State and Notre Dame football fan. He was an outstanding softball player, great bowler, loved billiards, throwing horseshoes and playing euchre with his family. He leaves behind beautiful memories instilled in his six beloved children.

Survivors also include three sons, David Cowart, of Toledo, Robert J. Patterson and Jamie (Kendra) Patterson Jr., both of Lima; three daughters, Tina L. VanSchoyck, of Ada, Lisa A. (Gregory) Adkins, of Fort Jennings, and Jodie L. (Charlie) Love, of Lima; three sisters, Patricia M. (Don) Ellerbrock, of Glandorf, Ellen "Nelle" (Tim Casey) Owsley and Kathleen Patterson, both of Lima; 23 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Cathy Patterson, of Toledo; and a brother-in-law, Jim Flanagan, of Lima.

He was preceded in death by a son-in-law, John VanSchoyck; a brother, William Patterson; and a sister, Joanne Flanagan.

Services will begin at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Gardendale Church of God. The Rev. Terry Davies and the Rev. Joy Poonoly will officiate. Entombment will be in Gethsemani Cemetery mausoleum.
