Charles is the son of Adolph August Zwanzig and Augusta Zwanzig both from Germany. According to the 1900 -1920 census records, he was born in Germany. His family came in 1880-1883 to Galveston. His father and five of his siblings perished in the Galveston hurricane on 8 September 1900. On March 21, 1903, he married the widow, Abbey Kettenburg Abbott. One child born; a still born boy- b. 21 October 1903. They were divorced before 1922 when he married his second wife, Sara Emma May.
