Mom and Dad met on the steps of the Pentagon. She was a Navy Wave, acting as a messenger, and he was a young Naval officer, reporting to the Pentagon. They enjoyed talking, spending time getting to know each other, going to the Episcopal church together, and dancing to the Big Bands, many of whom traveled through the area. Things grew serious, and she met his widowed mother, who shared an apartment with Dad in the area. And Dad traveled to Austin, Texas, to meet Mom's parents and family. He proposed, and Mom agreed to become his Navy wife on her birthday, October 9, 1946. They had 3 children together, whom they took with them to England and Japan, making friends wherever they went and teaching us kids to enjoy and accept other cultures and traditions. They later settled in San Antonio, Texas, near family on both sides, good schools, and military Air Force and Army bases with excellent medical care. Dad became the Commander of the local Naval Reserve Force until his retirement, after which he became a teacher of high school mathematics, where he was loved and appreciated by his students.
