Funeral services for Robert Elton Thum were conducted at 10 a.m. Friday, April 23, 1999, at the Vase Funeral Chapel, 154 Elk St., Rock Springs. The Rev. Michael Barry officiated. Interment was in the Mountain View section in the Rock Springs Municipal Cemetery.

Thum, 79, of Sherman Oaks, Calif., died Monday, April 19, 1999, in Los Angeles. He was a former resident of Rock Springs.

He was born Aug. 19, 1919 in Rock Springs, the son of the late Gottlieb and Emma McMahan Thum. Thum attended schools in Rock Springs. During his junior year of high school, he transferred to the Pacific Military Academy in Southern California. Upon graduating from the Pacific Military Academy in 1937, he accepted a commission to the U. S. Naval Academy, Class of 1942. Because of the United States involvement in World War II, he graduated early from the U. S. Naval Academy in December 1941.

Soon after graduating at the top of his call from the U. S. Naval Academy with a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering, he received orders to serve in the Pacific Theater during World War II. On Dec. 24, 1941, he boarded the USS Hornet and headed to war. He served on the USS Hornet when the Doolittle raiders launched their attack against Japan and was aboard the Hornet when it was attacked and sunk by the Japanese in the Battle of Coral Sea. He also served on other aircraft carriers during World War II and fought in the major battles in the Pacific, including the Battle of Midway and the Battle for Guadalcanal. After World War II, while serving in the Navy, he earned a master's in business administration from New York University. After his retirement from the Navy, he had a career as a real estate investor in Southern California.

Survivors include sons Robert E. Thum and wife Lynda of Savannah, Ga., and Richard E. Thum and wife Sharlene of San Antonio, Texas; daughters, Ann Jurski and husband Jim of Noblesville, Ind., Lynn Caldwell and husband Kevin of Dallas, and Margaret Thum Miles and husband Doug of Belmont, Calif.; grandchildren, David Jurski, Carrie Thum, Ryan Thum, John Robert Caldwell and William Caldwell, great-grandchildren, Dylan Jurski and Chandler Jurski; nieces Pat Barry Dunbar and Peg Barry; nephew, Rev. Michael Barry; and numerous other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Rose Thum Barry; granddaughter, Sara Jurski; and great-grandson Dustin Jurski.
