Emma was born in Lawrence County, but spent most of her childhood in Monroe County. Her father was a farm laborer who did not own a farm of his own. The family rented and moved as work was available.
In 1929, when Emma was 14, her mother died of stomach cancer. By that time, Emma's older siblings had left home, leaving her to take on domestic duties for her father and her two youngest brothers.
Emma graduated from high school when she was about 16. Her brothers, Alvie and Forrest, followed her older brother, Cresson, to Washington state. Eventually her father moved to Washington as well.
Emma married June 26 1933 to Marshall May. She was 19 and he was 20. On Dec 4 1933, they had their first child. Emma had five daughters:
Margaret Rose. 1933-1937
Nancy Iris 1935
Leah Helen 1938
Donna Judith 1940
Martha Lou 1942
Emma and Marshall separated briefly in the early 1940s during which time she married Harold May. This marriage was short-lived and Emma and Marshall were soon reconciled.
In the early 1960s Marshall built a small greenhouse next to their barn and the family began selling plants out of their side yard. By the spring of 1965, they opened a family business: Mays Greenhouse.
Besides gardening, Emma was an excellent cook. She was interested in family history. She enjoyed collecting antiques and had a large collection of antique bottles. She enjoyed spending time with her family and doted on her four grandchildren.
In 1973 Emma suffered a series of strokes. She died Oct 2 1973 at the age of 59.
