Ernest Lealdes MAY was born on June 30, 1878, in Monroe County Indiana. His parents were William Madison May and Susanna Catherine Sullivan. He was one of nine children and the eldest son.

On Mar 31 1908 Ernest married Rose Smiley. He was 29 and she was 19. Their first son was born July 11 1908. They had nine children in 21 years.

Ernest's father had been a farmer and Ernest became a farmer as well. However he never owned his own farm and after leaving the family homestead he had a difficult time supporting his family. At one point her worked for the WPA as a general laborer. In his later years he dug and sold wild ginseng.

Ernest died of prostate cancer on February 3, 1953, in Bloomington, Indiana, at the age of 74. He was buried at Valhalla Memory Gardens.
