World War II British Victorian Cross Medal Recipient. Serving as a Major in the Essex Scottish Regiment, he was ordered to breach the defense line of the last German bastion west of the Rhine at Hochwald, Germany. On March 1, 1945, in the face of intense enemy fire, Major Tilston led his company in the attack against the German trenches. Though wounded in the head he continued to lead his men forward and personally secured a machine gun position. He continued to lead his men forward systematically clearing the trenches, capturing enemy positions and held off counter attacks. Six times he made trips to get more ammunition for his men and was wounded which resulted in the loss of both his legs. For most prestigious gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was promoted Colonel and awarded the Victorian Cross Medal at Buckingham Palace, London, England, on June 22, 1945.
