Biographical Information

Eva Melissa Coates Withee, the youngest of the five children of Francis Jefferson Coates and Rachel Sarah* Drew, was most likely born in the community of Dorchester in Saline county, Nebraska. Eva's father lost his sight during the Civil War, nonetheless, he learned to read braille and became a successful stock rancher before his untimely death from pneumonia when Eva was just an infant.

Eva had 4 brothers and sisters, and in 1880, she, her widowed mother, and 3 of her siblings; Francis, William, and Rena; were residing together in Dorchester, Saline, Nebraska. Also present in the home is Rachel's father, Waldron Drew.

By 1900, Eva left the family home and was residing in Grand Island city Ward 2, Hall, Nebraska. Her brother, Frank, and his family were also residing here, and by the additional persons and their positions listed; such as clerks, several servants, two cooks, a nurse, and several boarders; it seems that they may have been in the hotel / boarding business, or something similar.

The 1900 census also reveals a bit more about Eva's mother, Rachel. She was still residing in Dorchester with no others present in her home. She was also now using the name of Rachel S Brown, so it seems she was widowed a second time.

It is also revealed that she was the mother of 5 children with four still living. The only child unaccounted for was her second child, Alfarata, who was also absent from the 1880 census and apparently died at an early age.

As a side note, Rachel's father and mother were born in New Hampshire and Indiana respectively.

As for Eva, she was wed sometime between 1900 and 1908 to Joseph A Withee. At the time of his death in 1908, they were the parents of two children. I am currently unsure of their identities.

(2) Alfarata Coates, b March of 1869. Deceased prior to the 1880 census. The monument was purchased in 1964 by a grandson, Charles Coates, to honor his grandfather.
