Elizabeth Darnell was born on Christmas Day, 1836. Her father, William DARNELL, was 59 when she was born and her mother, Elizabeth CLEMMONS, was 34. Her father had served in the War of 1812 and most likely farmed when he was younger. Later in life he became a hatter.

Elizabeth had an older half brother and at least nine full siblings:

When Elizabeth was 21 she married a widowed farmer, FRANCIS "Frank" HAGAN. Frank had been married twice previously and already had nine children. Their marriage certificate indicates that Elizabeth had also been married once before. (No other documentation). Together Frank and Elizabeth went on to have an additional nine children together in the course of 17 years:
