STREET

Roland Kipper "Kay" Street, second son of Linley Casteel and Ida (Kipper) Street, was born April 27, 1915. Roland Kay departed this life Saturday, Dec. 30, 2000, at his home in Humeston, Iowa, at the age of 85 years, 8 months and 3 days.

He was baptized in the Cambria Methodist Church. Linley and Ida moved their family of three boys, Ralph, Roland and Raedean, to Cambria, Iowa to make their home. Soon after the move, a sister, Ester Karlene was welcomed into the family, but God called her to the heavenly home at the tender age of 6 months. Nick, Charles and Maynard followed to complete the family.

While attending Cambria Consolidated School, he lettered in baseball, basketball, track and declamatory, graduating with the class of 1932.

During the next few years, Kay worked for several farmers, among them were Hurl and Opal Sheets. They and their family of four little girls were very special to Kay.

He bought a truck and did small time hauling until the threat of war called Kay to enlist in an all Iowa group for one year in the U.S. Army. War broke out and the one year turned into 4 1/2 years. He took basic training at Camp Polk, La. Further instruction was at Hershey, Pa., and the Mojave Desert. He was trained as a high speed radio operator and then he instructed radio school. He played a pivotal role in handling highly classified communications for the 3rd Armored Division. As Staff Sergeant, he was honorably discharged on Sept. 28, 1945.

He met and married Gladys White of Chariton in 1945. To this union, two daughters were born, Jacklyn Kay and Jean Eileen.

In December 1945, Kay went to work for Bob Linton at Linton's Mens Shop, after buying part of the business which included dry cleaning, pool hall and tavern. Ill health forced Kay to retire and sell the business at the age of 70, in 1985.

That which Kay enjoyed most in his life was his family, fishing, hunting, bowling, golfing, gardening and trapping.

He was preceded in death by his parents; little sister; brothers, Ralph, Charles and Raedean; and special mother-in-law, Cora White.

Surviving are his wife, Gladys; daughters, Jacklyn (Kenny) Sinnott and Jeanie (Gary) Head; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and two brothers, Maynard and Nick Street.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2001, at the Fielding Funeral Home in Chariton with the Rev. Max Haggard officiating. Burial was in the Humeston Cemetery. Bearers included Chad Bremer, Steve Bright, Jeff Norris, David Street, Calvin Street and Bobby Krutsinger. Honorary bearers were Nick Street, Craig Street, Jerry Street, Kevin Street, K. C. Hatfield, John Warnock and Marvin Foster. Military rites were conducted at the cemetery by American Legion Alva Eaton Post 306 of Humeston.
