His parents, Willis Isaac Mitchell and Margaret Olive Burch were farmers, however for most of their lives they did not own farmland. Willis either rented or worked the land of other farmers. In 1910 Ralph's parents moved the family to Galveston Texas where Willis worked as a farm laborer for a grower. They were back in Lawrence Co. Indiana by 1914 however.
The family was never wealthy and supporting so many children was difficult.
Ralph married 03 Apr 1926 when he was 19. His bride was 17-year-old Gail Hayse. The couple had two sons, only one of which lived to adulthood:
Basil Leroy Mitchell 1928–1978
Leo Clyde Mitchell 1937–1937
Ralph worked for a stone quarry as a young man and later in life he worked as a carpenter.
He outlived all his other siblings by at least a decade and died in 1985 at the age of 78. Cause of death was coronary artery disease.
