David’s grandfather was millionaire insurance, banking and railroad tycoon, Alexander Mitchell (1817-1887). David was raised by his grandparents in Milwaukee after his parents (John Lendrum Mitchell and Bianca Cogswell Mitchell) had a bitter divorce when he was under two years of age.
Alexander and Martha Mitchell built the fabulous estate called Villa Alexandria in Jacksonville on the St. Johns River (ca. 1872-1925). After Alexander Mitchell passed away in 1887, David and his grandmother resided permanently at Villa Alexandria.
