David Ferguson Mitchell was originally buried in Historic St. Nicholas Cemetery, Jacksonville, FL, near his grandmother, Martha Reed Mitchell (1818-1902) who remains buried there. Martha, originally from Milwaukee WI, was the sister of Harrison Reed, Governor of Florida from 1868-1873. Martha and Harrison both made many contributions to Jacksonville, Milwaukee and US history.

David’s grandfather was millionaire insurance, banking and railroad tycoon, Alexander Mitchell (1817-1887). David was raised by his grandparents in Milwaukee after his parents (John Lendrum Mitchell and Bianca Cogswell Mitchell) had a bitter divorce when he was under two years of age.

Alexander and Martha Mitchell built the fabulous estate called Villa Alexandria in Jacksonville on the St. Johns River (ca. 1872-1925). After Alexander Mitchell passed away in 1887, David and his grandmother resided permanently at Villa Alexandria.

Information about David can be found in a Library of Congress document and in publications about the Milwaukee Mitchell families.
