American Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He was issued the award on January 15, 1894 for his actions as a sergeant with Company E, 52nd Illinois Infantry, US Army, on April 6, 1862, at Pittsfield Landing, Tennessee, during the Battle of Shiloh. He joined the US Army in October 1861 and had achieved the rank of 1st lieutenant at the time of his discharge in December 1864. After the war, he moved to Sioux City, Iowa, where he died at the age of 80. His Medal of Honor citation reads: "Although twice wounded, and thereby crippled for life, he remained fighting in open ground to the close of the battle."
