World War I British Victoria Cross Medal Recipient. Born in South Africa, during World War I, he served as a Private in the British 1st Battalion, South African Infantry, South African Forces. At the Battle of Delville Wood France, on July 18, 1916, his unit came under heavy rifle and machinegun fire with a majority of his party being killed or wounded, including the Lieutenant in charge, who was unable to move between the two lines of trench. In full daylight Private Faulds, accompanied by two other men, climbed over the parapet, ran out, picked up the officer and carried him back. Two days later Faulds went out alone, under intense artillery fire and brought in another wounded man and rejoined his platoon. He was one of only three South Africans in the SA Imperial Service Contingents to be awarded the Victoria Cross. Faulds went on to serve in World War II as a Captain in the Contingents, seeing action in Italian Somaliland and Abyssinia with the Rhodesian forces.
