George was only five years old when the fever took his father William Wesley,in May 1872 and two months later in June his mother and two months after that a foster child his parents were caring for, Jasper Darby. His father had survived the Civil War and other hardships through the years, this was not something he could overcome.
George now would face many hardships of his own, being moved from home to home, losing his grandmothers.

Both of his grandfathers , Chesley K. Redifer and Jesse Hunt had died from fever in 1854 before he was born. George's grandmother Hunt was Martha Elizabeth Hale from Tennessee, she had remarried to a Samuel Smith after her husband Jesse Hunt had died. They took George's brother William Porterfield Redifer in and cared for him. George went to live with his grandmother Susan Rebecca Haldeman Redifer who lived in Dallas County. She died in 1874 and George went to live with his father's youngest brother Robert Porterfield Redifer also in Dallas county. The two boys were shuttled among relatives for many years, Martha Hale Hunt Smith died in 1886 when brother William was seventeen. Both boys ended up living with their Uncle Robert P. Redifer until they came of age.

It took 11 years for George and his brother William to get legal ownership of his father's property. George was 19 years old when he signed the final papers on his father's land.
