Bertha V. Smith Chezem
Bertha Chezem was born November 30, 1909 at Quinter, KS. She was the daughter of Samuel and Mary (Bowman) Jamison. She passed from this life March 9, 1993 at the Gove County Hospital, Quinter, KS at the age of 83 years, 3 months, 9 days.

She was a graduate of Quinter High School.

Bertha was a loving mother and spent the majority of her life as a devoted homemaker. She was also co-owner of the Dairy Delite in Quinter for ten years.

She was a member of the Church of the Brethren, the Helping Hands Club, Lone Star Cluyb, and the Brethren ladies quilting group.

Bertha was a very loving and caring person. Before her illness she would make daily visits and spend many hours visiting and helping friends and acquaintances at the Gove County Long Term Care Unit. Some of her hobbies included baking and cooking for her family and friends, spending quiet time reading and enjoying the outdoors and nature through her love of fishing. Bertha was known throughout the community as someone whom others could depend on.

On March 18, 1931 Bertha was united in marriage with Floyd (Bud) Smith at Quinter,KS. He passed away August 23, 1972. She then married Burley O. Chezem on October 5, 1973 at Quinter, KS. He passed away December 24, 1988.

Survivors include three sons: Gordon L. Smith, Frank L. Smith and Larry G. Smith; one sister Carrie; six grandchildren; and 9 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant son Jerry Dean Smith; six brothers: Dennis, Samuel, Cephas, Charles, Willie, Johnny; and four sisters: Nora Cook, Minnie Williams, Lola Brooks, and Hannah Nemeyer.

Funeral services were Friday, March 12, 1993 at the Church of the Brethren, Quinter, KS with Pastor David K. Hendricks and Lay Minister Stan Smith officiating; burial was at the Quinter City Cemetery. Schmitt Funeral Home of Quinter was in charge of arrangements. The family suggests memorials to the Gove County Medical Center landscaping fund.
