The tree, located across the street to the north of the Murrah Building, and directly in front of the bombed out hulk of the Journal Record Building, sustained the full force of the blast, and survived. After the April 19, 1995 tragedy, the tree rapidly became a symbol of hope to family members who lost loved ones in the bombing, as well as survivors of the blast, and the name "Survivor Tree" was adopted.
