FRNK GARDNER, 57, DIES AT LEWIS HOME
OPERATED RAILROAD PUMPIG STATION HERE FOR 41 YEARS.
Frank Folger Gardner, 57, died Sunday at 1:55 p.m. at eh Lewis Nursing Home, where he had been a patient since January 20.
Funeral services were held at Wolfe's Funeral Home Tuesday afternoon with Rev. Arthur Mortenson in charge. Burial was in the Villisca Cemetery.
Pall bearers included All Darnell, Charles Meyeroff, Forest L. Means, Floyd Benson, Orville Wagaman, and Wayne Smith. Music was furnished by by Albert F. Davie, accompanied at the piano by Mrs. J. L. Wheeler.
Familiar Figure
Mrs. Gardner was a familiar figure in Villisca, having been born and raised in this in this community. At the age of 15 years he quit school to assume the responsibility of caring for his mother, and invalid sister, taking his late father's place at the C.B. & Q. Railroad pumping station here. He was retired from service on pension, January 20, 1938, with a record of 41 years of service.
he was the youngest son of James and Anna Gardner and ws born October 29, 1881. He is survived by a brother, John, who lives at Oakland, California. His parents and two sisters preceded him in death.
In 1916 he went to the Mexican border with the Villisca Unit of National Guard. He was member of Montgomery Lodge No. 270, A.F. & A. M.
Early settler.
Mrs. Gardner's father was one of the early settlers in Villisca and was for more than 30 years an employee of the C.B. & Q. Railroad. He died January 16, 1901, at the age of 91. James Gardner was born at Bitterwell, Warickshire, England where he became a Railroad Contractor. In 1869 he came to America and went at once to Chicago where he presented his recommendations to the C.B. & Q. officials was engaged by them and sent to Burlington to work. A year later he came to Villisca with his family and resided here until his death. Mr. and Mrs. Gardner married in Llandonery, South Wales in 1868.
James Gardner worked at various places while the railroad was bring built, from Burlington to Pacific Junction, and was finally placed in charge of the railroad pumping station here, which at that time operated by wind or hand power.
James and his son, Frank after him operated the pumping staton over 70 years.
