Johann (John) Heinrich Christian Gast was born on October 17, 1841 in Neukirchen, Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Germany. In 1868, while still a resident of Germany, he married Sophia Maria Christina Niemann. Sophia was born in August 1846. To their marriage, eight children were born.

In 1874, the couple immigrated to the United States and settled in West Bend, Wisconsin. They made their home in Wisconsin only a short time, and moved to Falls City (Richardson County), Nebraska. The 1880 census indicates that they lived in the Ohio Precinct of Richardson County. On November 18, 1882, they purchased a farm near Falls City. They were charter members of St. Paul's Lutheran Church there. In 1892 the family left Nebraska and moved to Richland County, North Dakota. However, records indicate that they didn't sell their Nebraska farm until March 1894. The 1900 and 1910 census indicates they were living in Summit Township, North Dakota.

Sophia passed away in Summit Township on July 2, 1915 at age 68. Johann went to live with his son William and his family, also in Summit Township, and passed away eight years later in Summit Township on July 10, 1923 at the age of 81. He is buried in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery.
