Upon returning home from the Merchant Marines, Rick worked many years with John Griffith Trucking as a Heavy Equipment Operator and was a member of the Operating Engineers Union. He had recently retired from the State of Illinois where he started as site maintenance at the Dana Thomas House. He also worked with IDOT as a Highway Maintainer, spending many hours driving the roads of Illinois. His last position with the State was as a Stationery Engineer with CMS where he garnered many awards for excellent work performance. Rick was also a partner with his brother Robert in R & M Construction, a company that helped preserve and maintain many of Springfield's older homes and buildings.
Rick's happiest moments were when he was either on a ship or near the ocean enjoying the water. During his life, Rick enjoyed traveling, gardening and spending time with his family and pets. He was an avid HO scale train operator and also enjoyed collecting WWII memorabilia and American Indian art. Rick was a lifelong member of the Republican Party and as one of the first members of Steel Justice Motorcycle Club he was a staunch supporter of ABATE.
Rick is survived by his wife Christine of Buckhart; step-daughters, Danielle Durham of Springfield and Sarah Durham, of Austin, Texas; his father, Robert L. of Rochester; two brothers, Robert L. Goby of Springfield and Rhett L. Goby (Sue Ann) of Naples, FL; sister, Judith Goby Oxtoby (Thomas) of Naples, Fl; his step-brother Jerry Henley, Houston, TX and step-sister Christine Zelle, Springfield, his Aunt, Mrs. John (Linda) Heisinger, Rochester, his nephew, Robert A. Goby, and his two nieces Victoria and Laura Goby, and a grand nephew, plus numerous cousins.
