Add PhotosThe Walney estate is located between Walney Road (Route 657) and Sully Road (Route 28) on the grounds of what is now Ellanor C. Lawrence Park, just north of Centreville.
According to information from Fairfax County Park Authority, the land near Big Rocky Run was first purchased by Willoughby Newton about 1739-1740. Thomas Brown leased part of the property and eventually purchased 400 acres north of Big Rocky Run in 1761. When Thomas Brown died in 1793, his son Coleman inherited most of the estate.
The land passed down through the Brown family. In the 1830s Coleman Lewis, who had married Brown's daughter Mary, took !I over the operation of the farm. When Lewis H. Machen t purchased the property from the Lewis children (his cousins) in 1843, one-eighth of an acre was reserved as a "place of interment in which lie buried the remains of some of the ancestors of . . . Samuel L. Lewis and Mary C. B. Lewis" (Deed Book 13, page 198).
