It was probably begun as a slave cemetery in the 1830s or 1840s on land owned by Lawson Moore, whose plantation house was nearby (now a ruin to the east of US-127/150 Bypass west of Danville).
As of Sep 1991 it was completely overgrown, but several attempts have been made to clean and restore it, notably in 1992, 1994, 2011, and 2014 (Danville Advocate-Messenger, 28 Feb 2011).
Currently, work is under way again at preserving the cemetery permanently,
