Add PhotosThe First African Baptist Church Graveyard was located at 8th and Vine Streets in Philadelphia, PA. It was closed in 1841 because of overcrowding and would not be discovered until 1980 during construction of the Vine Street Expressway. The remains were re-interred in Eden Cemetery, Collingdale, Delaware County, PA, in 1987.
There was a splinter congregation of this church whose graveyard was located at 10th and Vine Streets. This cemetery was found at the same time as the first one. The remains were also re-interred in Eden Cemetery, in 1995, after in-depth archaelogical investigation of the bodies. The items that people were buried with are now with the African American Museum in Philadelphia.
The First African Baptist Church is still active. Their website is http://www.thefabchurch.org/.
