Add PhotosThe First Dutch Reformed Church was organized in 1806 as the Second Reformed Association when a group of English-speaking members left the First German Reformed Church. In 1810, the name was changed to the Evangelical Reformed Congregation, and in 1813 to the First Reformed Protestant Dutch Church.
A burial lot on the north side of Cherry Street, east of Tenth, was purchased ca. 1809-1810, and expanded in 1825. It had a width of 33 feet on Cherry Street, and a depth of 144 feet. The ground was found to be largely unsuitable for burying purposes on account of the clayey character of the soil and it was abandoned, though family burials continued to be made as late as 1857. The cemetery was partially moved to Laurel Hill Cemetery ca 1867-1868. The Philadelphia College of Pharmacy was built on the northern portion of this lot in 1868; in the course of excavations for its new building, several skeletons were exhumed by the laborers.
The congregation subsequently purchased an additional piece of ground for burial purposes from Henry Pratt, on May 11, 1824 on the south side of Sassafras (now Race) Street, between Schuylkill Seventh (now 16th) and Schuylkill Eighth (now 15th) Streets. It had a front of 87 feet on Race Street and 60 feet on Cherry Street, and extended 292 feet to the latter street. In September 1854, the grounds were sold and the remains were removed to Section 13 of South Laurel Hill Cemetery.
