Add PhotosThe first pet buried here was a Maltese named Cherry, who belonged to J. Lewis Barned and his family. They were frequent visitors at Hyde Park and became well acquainted with the gatekeeper, Mr Windbridge.
When the Barned dog, Cherry, died in 1881, they asked Mr Windbridge, if they could bury the little dog there at Hyde Park, since it was a place where they had such happy times. Mr Windbridge agreed and this was just the beginning.
The pet cemetery grew to about 300 burials. The last burial was in 1903 according to most sources but others believe it was much later than that. Besides dogs and cats, even two monkeys are laid to rest there.
A cat who is said to have died at the age of 38 is also buried here.
No longer an active cemetery. It can only be visited by request, it is to be made at least one week in advance and it is to be made to the Royal Parks who manage Hyde Park including this pint size pet cemetery.
