This burial ground was established on or before 1826 and may have originally been the second home of the First Church of the New Jerusalem who were said to have moved to a new location at Fifth and Washington and styled themselves the First Independent Church of Southwark. By 1852 however the church had become an Independent Methodist congregation unaffiliated with the main body of the Methodist Episcopal Church.


The burial ground is no longer extant.


This church should not be confused with the First Independent Christian Church, A.K.A. the First Independent Church of Philadelphia, later renamed Chambers Presbyterian Church and now Pilgrim Congregational Church, originally located in Kensington and which later relocated to South Broad Street, or the First Independent Church of Christ, more commonly known as the First Universalist Church.
