Add PhotosThe Welsh Burying Ground dates back to 1809 when the St. David's Society purchased land to create a burial ground for its members. The ground extended from Market Street to Oak (now Ludlow Street) between 40th and 41st Streets. In 1834, the surviving members of the Society conveyed ownership to the Welsh Society. Owing to the rapid growth of the City of Philadelphia in the mid-1800s, the bodies were removed, in 1864, to Section 203, Mount Moriah Cemetery, and the property sold.
Note that Mount Moriah Cemetery is the resting place of many people from the earliest of cemeteries and churches in Philadelphia. Section 203 also contains the members of St. George's Methodist Episcopal Church Cemetery.
The above information was published by Charles R Baker in "Publications of The Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania"
