Add PhotosThe Ninth Presbyterian Church was organized in May, 1822 when the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Congregation merged with the Presbyterian Church of the United Sates. A small Associate Reformed congregation, worshipping in a small brick building on Thirteenth Street above Market, procured a charter under the name "Ninth Presbyterian Church." In 1824, the congregation purchased a lot to bury their dead on Sassafras Street (now Race Street) above 19th Street. Used for much of the early part of the century, further burials were prohibited in 1855. Some burials are said to have been removed in 1865.
The lot adjoining the ground on its east had been used as nursery for many years when, in 1876, the Academy of Natural Sciences built the first of its large buildings on the site. In 1915, the Ninth Presbyterian Church elected to sell their burial lot, now hemmed in by the Academy and housing, for development and remove the bodies, it is said, to Mount Moriah Cemetery.
However, desiring to keep the land next to their building empty, the Academy purchased a single lot in the burial ground and objected to its sale. The courts disagreed with the Academy's move and forced the sale through. The bodies were removed and a house was erected on a large portion of the former burial grounds.
Today, the Moore College of Art and Design occupies the site.
