Add PhotosThe First Universalist Church of the Northern Liberties of the City of Philadelphia was organized in 1820 and chartered in 1823. Later called the The Second Universalist Church, and now known as The Unitarian Universalist Church of the Restoration, it established a church on the north side of Callowhill Street, at Crown Street on a lot purchased in March 1822, and dedicated the building on October 17, 1823. Burial lots were laid out, chiefly in front of the church, and sold to raise funds for the construction of the edifice. One of the most notable burials was Reverend Savillion W. Fuller, a pastor of the church, who died after a long battle with tuberculosis in 1840 and was laid to rest under a large marble monument in the churchyard.
The building and grounds were sold in 1854-5. The deed stipulated that all "monuments, tombs and contents of the burial lot encumbering the said real estate" be moved upon relocation to the new location on 8th Street, south of Noble Street — the former Second Reformed Dutch Church/Eighth Street Methodist Episcopal Church. As it so happened, when his remains were removed with others in the churchyard, the monument to Reverend Fuller was thrown aside among the rubbish and broken. Though it was taken to a marble yard to be recut, it was mislaid and subsequently lost.
The congregation occupied the Eighth Street property until 1871, when they sold the building to Congregation Adath Israel. It has since been demolished.
