in 1970 eleven villages and towns were merged, the current city of Blomberg was formed. Though each district maintained their own cemetery. As the means of burials have shifted during the past 20 years, less full casket burials and more inurnments, the city has begun to seek new ways to maintain or even combine cemetery. In 2016 plans were being drafted to either decrease the size of some cemeteries or dissolve a cemetery altogether, especially the smaller ones, of which some of them have seen less than 4 burial a year. Some cemeteries in Blomberg will be closed for future burials and once the last period of repose has expired the property will be decommissioned as a cemetery.
The Friedhof Blomberg is the largest of all burial places in the city, with a size of about 10.6 acres. The chapel was built in 1956 and can seat about 110 mourners. The cemetery is non-denominational.
Please note that the graves in Germany are not perpetual. After a certain period of repose (in Blomberg: 15-30 years) the graves are being leveled and re-used. There is no toxic embalming being done in Germany, so the coffin and the corpse can decompose naturally. If the family of the deceased decides to purchase another period the duration can be extended by another 15 years. Otherwise the grave will be leveled and reused, the marker than used as gravel in road construction. War Graves are considered memorials and are kept up by the owner of the cemetery. Those are kept forever. Also, the town or owner of the cemetery might find a grave of historical significance and will protect and keep it.
