This cemetery was founded in the mid-19th century, and had fallen into serious neglect 100 years later. In 1951 the cemetery was purchased by the Philadelphia Housing Authority for the purpose of removing the remains and building subddivisions on the location. Most of the remains in this cemetery were removed in 1951 to Philadelphia Memorial Park in Frazer, Pennsylvania, with some others moved to Mount Peace Cemetery in Philadelphia, and Lawnview Cemetery in Rockledge. The Raymond Rosen Housing Project was then built on the site of the former burial ground. In 1999 the houses were torn down, and unremoved remains were found.
The original permit books for American Mechanic, Bellvue, German Lutheran and Union Cemeteries can be found at the Chester County Historical Society, West Chester (Chester County), Pa.
