Add PhotosBishop James Wood, foreseeing the growth of the area, purchased a lot at the corner of 20th and Christian Streets in 1866 as the future site of a church. Two years later on July 4, 1868, the parish was founded. Within two weeks a wood frame chapel was completed and the cornerstone for the new church was laid. Rev. James O'Reilly, ordained only eight years before, was the founding pastor to whom the task of erecting a permanent church was given. On May 7, 1876 the present church was dedicated.
The first three pastors of St. Charles, James O'Reilly, Nicholas A. Walsh and James P. Sinnott, were natives of Ireland, ideal choices to shepherd their Irish immigrant flock. Father Sinnott, educated at the North American College in Rome and ordained there in 1876, was the most notable. He was 38 when he was made pastor of St. Charles in 1888; he died there in 1925 and was interred in the yard of the rectory.
