The First Presbyterian Church in the Northern Liberties was originally established as a mission church of the Second Presbyterian Church in April, 1805. At the same time, a burial lot was purchased between Fifth and Sixth Streets and Noble and Buttonwood Streets.


In 1813 the the mission church became an independent congregation and in January, 1814, it was officially was incorporated as "The First Presbyterian Church in the Northern Liberties."


Burials continued to be made in the burial ground though 1856. In 1867, the ground was sold to Edward K. Tryon and many remains were removed to Mount Vernon Cemetery.
