Four years after the infamous outbreak of yellow fever in Philadelphia in 1793, the disease again made an appearance in the City in the summer of 1797. The city's board of health, at the request of the Governor of Pennsylvania, appropriated the former Wigwam Tavern, at the foot of Race Street on the Schuylkill River, for a temporary hospital to treat the sick. A burial ground for the hospital's dead was established on the north side of Race Street, between 22nd and 23rd Streets.

In use from the outbreak of fever in 1797 until about 1805, the City also interred paupers from the Almshouse on this site. It is no longer extant.
