Add PhotosThe original Society of the New Jerusalem in Philadelphia, which had been organized in 1815, had virtually ceased to exist about the year 1829, owing to the death of some of its leading members, the financial ruin of the chief supporters, the removal of other members, and the continued ill-health of its pastor, the Reverend M. M. Carll. Its Temple on 12th and Sampson streets had been sold, and most of the remaining members had associated themselves with the Southwark, or Second Philadelphia Society, a congregation which had followed its pastor, the Reverend Manning B. Roche, out of the nearby Trinity Episcopal Church into the "New Church."
The Second Society met in the Commissioners' (or Community) Hall in Southwark while they sought to erect a suitable edifice, which they eventually did, with a burial ground, on Fourth Street, below German Street.
By 1861, the church had conveyed its burial ground to the Delaware County New Jerusalem Society to alleviate debt incurred by the congregation with an obligation to "remove the bodies from the lot on German Street, whenever required by the Delaware County Society, after due notice." The burial grounds were indeed sold some time before 1875 and the remains therein removed — though in 1897, additional remains were found during construction and reinterred in a potter's field by the City.
