Add PhotosThe Saint John Street Methodist Episcopal Church established a burial ground between Parish at Poplar Streets at Franklin Street around the year 1828, when it acquired the lot, likely to supplement its old churchyard burying ground on Saint John Street.
Never a widely used, "but few interments having ever been made therein," in 1855, Franklin Street was extended by special act of legislature through the middle of the empty portion of the burial lot.
Around the year 1845, the church had opened a new burial ground in Rising Sun village which supplanted this burial ground's use.
In 1864, by a special act of the State Legislature, the Saint John Street Methodist Episcopal Church was empowered to sell the remaining parts of this old burial ground on the east and west sides of Franklin Street, provided that any remains not removed by the lot-holders be "re-interred, at the expense of said congregation, at the cemetery . . . at Rising Sun village . . . and the tomb-stones, belonging to such remains . . . be set over the same." By 1869, the burial ground had been removed and was sold for building lots.
Today the site houses the Ukrainian American Citizens' Association and the Philadelphia Police Department's Office of Forensic Science.
