Add PhotosThe Friends Philadelphia Monthly Meeting for the Southern District was established in 1772 on Orange Street at what was then the Southeast Public Square, by the Philadelphia Quarterly Meeting of Friends. A division of the Monthly Meeting of Friends of Philadelphia, its territory included the north side of Walnut Street and southward, including Moyamensing, Southwark, and Passyunk.
As it became clear that the Friends Arch Street burial ground was not going to be sufficient to accommodate the number burials from the the growing city, a number of alternate properties in Philadelphia were purchased for use as burial grounds.
One three-acre parcel, a portion on which the Orange Street Meeting was built, was set aside for use as a burial ground in 1788, but the water table was found to be too high, and only one documented burial in 1789 was ever attempted there. And so, the Southern District Friends purchased a lot in Southwark, at Fourth and Carpenter Streets, for their own use in 1814.
Used for almost thirty years as a burial ground, a committee authorized its sale in 1843 as "inconvenient." Interments were removed elsewhere and the land sold. A meat packing yard was subsequently established on the site.
