Add PhotosCongregation Beth Israel (also known as the House of Israel) was organized in June, 1840. The congregation flourished, and in 1844 the it established a cemetery on Arabella Street, and in 1847-48 ground was broken on Crown Street, between Race and Vine and 4th and 5th Streets, for an elegant synagogue.
The burgeoning membership of the congregation also saw the need to lay out another cemetery nearer where its members had settled in the city. And so, in 1860, it purchased a lot in the village of Jacksonville, now Nicetown, on the corner of Franklin (now Dell) and McFerran Streets for a new cemetery.
Used for thirty years, the increasing number of nondenominational and Jewish cemetery companies saw the need for independently maintained congregational cemeteries decline. And so, in January 1891, the congregation gave notice that "all the bodies buried in the rear of Franklin and McFerran streets [were] to be disinterred," with removal beginning on January 5.
The site was cleared and later sold to the Nicetown Baptist Church, which erected a church building on the site.
