Add PhotosCongregation Keneseth Israel was organized at a meeting on March 2, 1847. At the third meeting of the congregation, on March 29th, 1847, the decision was made to buy a cemetery, even before adequate provision had been made to secure a house of worship.
But it wasn't until March 21, 1865, that the congregation secured a lot of land on Clinton Street, now Elser Street, from John C. Elser, in the village of Jacksonville (now Nicetown) for a cemetery, which it used to bury its dead for more than 20 years.
On March 28, 1889, the congregation adopted a formal resolution to abandon the cemetery; as the Jewish community grew there, cemetery companies unaffiliated with any congregation had sprung up, and as some family members belonged to different congregations but nevertheless desired to be buried together, these companies proved more than adequate to serve the needs of the community.
The land was sold in July, 1900, and today a car lot occupies the site.
