Add PhotosWhen Congregation Rodeph Shalom outgrew its first burial ground in the Kensington district, which it had purchased for that purpose in 1801, they sought another site in which to bury their dead. And so, in May, 1838, Joseph H. Siddall conveyed a lot of land on Nice Street in the village of Jacksonville, later Nicetown, in the far reaches Northern Liberties to the synagogue to establish a new burial ground.
In December, 1844, the congregation expanded the burial ground with the purchase of an adjoining lot. But maintenance of the grounds proved to be a source of continuous irritation to the congregation; in January 1850, for example, a committee found the burial ground to be a sorry condition. "The ground has never been regularly laid out," they reported, "and no regularity having been observed in the positions of the graves, much ground must consequently be lost having no gravel-walks in the whole burying ground, when we have to make an interment, we will be compelled to walk over the graves. The grass and weeds are now one half as high as the tomb stones, and when an interment is necessary in rainy weather a serious inconvenience is felt which greatly endangers health."
Negotiations with neighboring lot holders to again enlarge the burial ground were not successful, and so, in 1854, the congregation established a new burial ground in Harrowgate.
It is thought burials were removed from the Nicetown Cemetery around 1889; the former grounds were conveyed to James B. Carey on December 12, 1896, and homes were later built on the site. Today, the site is under a retail store.
