Add PhotosThe constituent members of Shiloh Baptist Church were members of the Union Baptist Church (better known then as Scott's Church), Little Pine street above Sixth street (now Addison street). About the year of 1840 or 1841 there arose some trouble in the church, and 43 members withdrew from the church and were received into the First African Baptist Church. But in July 1842, the members voted to sever their connection with that congregation and commence a new Baptist interest in the more southern section of the city.
That September, they constituted as the Shiloh Baptist Church, purchased a property on Bedford Street (now Kater Street) off Clifton Street, and erected a church building. Behind the church, they established a small burial lot. Later, as the congregation expanded, they erected a large Greek Revival church on the corner with Clinton Street and removed their churchyard burial ground elsewhere.
In 1885, the building was sold to African Methodist Episcopal Wesley Church (also known as Murray Chapel). In 1899, the church's pastor, John M. Palmer, changed its name to the Mount Olive African Methodist Episcopal Church.
Today, the Church is known as the Waters Memorial African Methodist Episcopal Church.
