Anderson-Deckard Cemetery (AND2)

Section 35, Clear Creek Township, Monroe County, Indiana.

There are three tombstones and also three field stones in the Anderson-Deckard Cemetery. The first and last documented burials in the cemetery were in 1890 and 1931, respectfully.

County Cemeteries of Monroe c/1830-1990, by the Monroe County Historical Society, Bloomington, IN 47408, shows that this cemetery contains the following eight people plus three field stones.

Anderson; Clara, Daniel, Mary, Thomas
Elkins; Mary E, Wm
Pace; Joseph, Marenia

In the above photo of the Anderson-Deckard Cemetery the three tombstones are, left-to-right, Pace, Anderson, Elkins.

In addition, the Index to Death Records, Monroe County, Indiana shows that Polly Meadows was buried in the Anderson Cemetery in 1923. The obituary for Mary Jane "Polly" Keith Meadows states that she lived in the "Fairfax neighborhood" and was buried in the Anderson Cemetery.

Location of cemetery: This cemetery is located on private property. From the 90 degree turn at Harden Ridge Road (Lawrence County) to Guthrie Road, also known as County Road 900 N, (Monroe County) take the gravel driveway that runs north 740 feet to the building, then walk an additional 570 feet west-northwest along an old roadbed. There is a gate on this gravel driveway at Guthrie Road.

The Clear Creek Township web site and County Cemeteries of Monroe c/1830-1990 both currently incorrectly state that this cemetery is in Section 36 of Clear Creek Township. It is in Section 35. A portion of the Clear Creek Township web site's current narrative regarding the location of this cemetery (i.e., "WPA described location as: East side of Guthrie Road, North of county line") is meaningless due to Guthrie Road was relocated sometime after the WPA era of 1935 to 1943.

I believe that Guthrie Road in this vicinity was relocated two times after the WPA wrote the narrative on the location of the Anderson-Deckard Cemetery. This is why I say that the Clear Creek Township web site's inclusion of the WPA's Anderson Cemetery location description is meaningless. The first relocation of Guthrie Road was from adjacent to the Anderson-Deckard Cemetery to what is now Prince Road. The second relocation of Guthrie Road was due to the construction of Monroe Lake in 1965 which moved Guthrie Road from what is now Prince Road to its current location.

In 2015 the Clear Creek Township updated its web site for the location of the cemetery and added the following.

"Located in Section 36 North-West in the woods about 350 feet down off to the right (North) down an old (now private) gravel lane beginning at the 90 turn from Hardin Ridge Road and County Road 900 North (also know as East Guthrie Road). N3859.659 x W08628.914"

This updated addition to the description of the location of the cemetery by Clear Creek Township is an improvement and makes sense if you change "350 feet" to 1,300 feet. However, the longitude and latitude coordinates provided by the Clear Creek Township are 29 miles away from the cemetery.

Multiple Anderson Cemeteries: In Monroe County, Indiana there are two Anderson Cemeteries; Anderson Cemetery (AND1) in Washington Township (Section 33) and Anderson-Deckard Cemetery (AND2) in Clear Creek Township (Section 35). AND1 has one listing (Leander M Anderson, DOD 02-24-1868) and three or four field stones. AND2 has three tombstones (with eight names) and three field stones. There is also an Anderson Cemetery in Lawrence County, Indiana which is five miles southwest of the Anderson-Deckard Cemetery (AND2) in Monroe County, Clear Creek Township. The Anderson Cemetery in Lawrence County, Indiana, as of July 2015, has 47 interments on Find A Grave.
