Lakota Chief. He was born about 1833 but little is known of his early years except that he took in the battle of Little Big Horn in 1876. Long Wolf joined Buffalo Bill Cody's Wild West show, and with his wife, and 12 year old daughter Lizzie, he traveled with the show on its European tour. In 1892 the troupe was in England where Long Wolf contracted bronchial pneumonia and died aged about 59. An autopsy was carried out in a West London Hospital, where the report described a body covered in the scars of bullet wounds and saber cuts. His wife, Wants, feared that his body would be put overboard if she tried to transport his remains home, so he was interred on June 13, 1892, in Brompton Cemetery, London. His wife and his employer, Buffalo Bill Cody, saw to it that the wolf image was carved into his headstone. Long Wolf's body remained in London for over a century, until a British woman, Elizabeth Knight of Worcestershire, learned his story and decided to trace his family, campaigning with them to have Long Wolf returned home. In 1997 Long Wolf was moved to a new plot in the Wolf Creek Community Cemetery at Pine Ridge, South Dakota.
